For final stretch of municipal election campaign, JCE announces ban on inaugurating public works

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) warned on Friday, 3 January 2020, that as of Tuesday, 7 January, public works inaugurations are banned in the country. This includes those carried out by mayors’ offices and the central government. Tuesday marks the start of the final stretch of the municipal electoral campaign for the 16 February 2020 municipal election nationwide.

The JCE informed the parties, groups, political movements and citizens in general of the ban, which is called for by the Electoral Regime Law 15-19 and the JCE’s 2020 Calendar of Administrative Activities and Legal Deadlines.

Article 196, paragraph IV of Law 15-19, establishes the ban on inaugurations during the 40 days before the date set for holding municipal elections and 60 days before the date set for holding presidential and congressional elections.

Likewise, the JCE notified that central government, the decentralized public entities and the mayors’ offices should refrain from carrying out extraordinary social or community support programs.

Also, the JCE announced that 17 January is the deadline for the creation, transfer or merger of polling stations, as per Article 57 of Law 55-19. The same day is the deadline for choosing the premises where the polling stations will operate.

The JCE has reported that 7,487,040 Dominicans have registered to vote in the 16 February 2020 municipal election.
