Carla Massiel Cabrera case to be heard in court

The judges of the Second Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice yesterday sent to trial Dr. Liliana Santana, accusing her of being involved in the murder of the 10-year old girl Carla Massiel Cabrera. The Penal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice determined there was sufficient evidence to try Santana for being the intellectual author of the crime. The family seeks a sentence of 30 years against the physician.

Media reports at the time mentioned irregularities in the autopsy and prosecution of the case. Allegedly the motive of the crime would be the sale of her organs.

Plutarco Jaquez, defense lawyer for Diolandita Cabrera, the mother of the minor, congratulated the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice since it recognizes the right of the victim to make a private accusation even if the prosecutor does not do so.

Carla Massiel was abducted on 25 June 2015, after leaving an evangelical service in company with her twin sister. Her body was found on 16 August 2016.

In the murder case, two men were sentenced to 30 years in jail. These are Darwin Jose Trinidad, who admitted to the kidnapping, and Juan Cabral Martinez (El Chuti), who said he was paid US$3,600 for the crime.

The defense lawyer Plutarco Jaquez representing Diolandita Cabrera, mother of Carla Massiel, says that Liliana Santana, was the intellectual author of the crime.

The case had been filed after prosecutors said there was not enough evidence for the hearing to take place.

The case now will now be heard by the Third Collegiate Court of Santo Domingo West.
