The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) has raised the green alert for high surf, abnormal waves and gusts of wind in Bavaro (Punta Cana) in La Altagracia province. The green alert is also in effect for the coastal areas of Matancita and Gaspar Hernández municipalities in María Trinidad Sánchez. Caution should be exercised when using the beaches or taking to sea.
The alert is due to the strong waves affecting the coasts of the country and that could become very dangerous, according to the COE.
The swells are due to the flow of east/northeast winds, creating a high-pressure system. The condition is affecting the national territory and will continue to do so over the next 24 to 48 hours, according to the last bulletin of the National Office of Meteorology (Onamet), issued on Sunday, 12 January in the evening.
