
The Dominican Republic joins Argentina, Brazil and the United States as representatives of the Americas in the women’s volleyball competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The Dominican women’s volleyball team will compete in Group A in the 12-team competition during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The DR (FIVB ranked 10th) will play a starting round in Group A against host Japan (7th), Serbia (3rd), Brazil (4th), South Korea (9th) and Kenya (19th). Competing in Group B will be China (winners of the Rio 2016 Olympics and top ranked in the world), the United States (2nd), Italy (8th), Russia (5th), Turkey (12th) and Argentina (11th). The volleyball competitions will take place at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo as part of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics set for 25 July to 9 August.
The Dominican Republic won the right to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics during the 10-12 January 2020 qualifier held in Santo Domingo.
In the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, the Dominican women’s teams placed 11th. In the 2012 Olympic Games the team placed 5th. Coach Marcos Kwiek says the Dominican volleyball team in 2020 is a much more mature and prepared team.
In 2019, the Dominican Republic won the gold medal in the volleyball competition of the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
