Despite Luis Abinader running for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) consistently gaining following, the January 2020 Gallup-Hoy poll says that he still does not have the 50%+1 of the vote needed to win in the election on Sunday, 17 May 2020. The second round poll is scheduled for Sunday, 28 June 2020.
Businessman Abinader still needs more votes to defeat the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) that has been in power for 16 consecutive years and has chosen former Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo for presidential candidate.
Gallup-Hoy says if the presidential elections were held on the day the person was polled, 42% would vote for the PRM’s Abinader 31.4% for the PLD’s Gonzalo Castillo and 15.5% for former President Leonel Fernández of the People’s Force, the new organization that was created after the split within the PLD following the 6 October 2019 party primary.
To the question, “Who do you think will win?,” 44.8% answered Abinader; 31.7% Castillo; and 11.9% former President Fernández.
The poll was from 16-21 January 2020. It has a 95% confidence level.
