Circe Almanzar backs JCE and calls for legislation to assist recycling

The executive vice-president of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD), Circe Almanzar told reporters that her organization is backing the efforts of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) to carry out the 16 February municipal elections. She added that her group will be, however, “vigilant” at all times during the process.

Almanzar participated in the Free Dialogue at the Diario Libre newspaper together with executives from the National Network for Business Support and the president of the Dominican Plastic Industries Association (Adiplast), Alvaro Sousa.

The business people met with Diario Libre journalists as part of their campaign to promote the Nuvi recycling initiative. Nuvi is a public-private partnership for the recycling of plastic waste. It groups 22 companies. The partnership seeks to sign agreements with local governments to install collection points. Households are being encouraged to separate plastic containers, that is those made from PET and other plastics, for these to be collected separately.

Local city governments will have an important role in all of this, but the business executives also feel that there is a need for legislation that covers all the bases. This legislation has been three years in the making and will cover promoting people separating household refuse, education of the citizenry on these issues, and also will provide fines for city governments that do not comply with the accords.
