The Embassy of Japan recognized Dominican dermatologist Edgardo Jorge Job for his contributions to the art of bonsai, and journalist Jose Rafael Sosa for his contribution to spreading the art of origami in the Dominican Republic.
Japan Ambassador Hiroyuki Makiuchi held a lunch on Sunday, 9 February 2020, in honor of the two Dominicans. Makiuchi emphasized that Jorge Job and Sosa for years have spread these two popular Japanese arts among Dominicans. He said they were examples of people that bridged the two cultures.
As reported, Jorge Job came into contact with bonsai making when he studied dermatology at Kawasaki University. He was impacted by the therapeutic effect the miniature trees could have on people.
Sosa, on the other hand, was initiated in origami by writer Manuel Llibre Otero, during a book fair at the Ateneo Amantes de la Luz, in 1992 in Santiago. Since then, he has dedicated himself to promoting this art, especially among teachers, as reported in Acento.
