Citizen Participation and the UN unite for sustainable development

The general coordinator of Citizen Participation, Sonia Díaz Inoa, and the United Nations resident coordinator in the country, Mauricio Ramírez Villegas, signed an agreement on sustainable development on Monday, 10 February 2020. Citizen Participation (CP) is the national chapter of Transparency International.

As explained in a press release, the initiative seeks to foster actions within the framework of public policies aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. These policies are aligned with the DR’s National Development Strategy (END). The focus is on the areas of democracy, citizen participation, human rights and transparency.

Díaz Inoa called for Dominican citizens to innovate, rethink policies and actions, and generate change to integrate the UN agenda with local development.

Ramírez Villegas said that Agenda 2030 is a starting point for empowering people, and has the virtue of strengthening national and local development agendas. “With only 10 years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we must intensify actions. We all have a contribution to make and social organizations play a key role in this,” he said.
