The Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC) announced a ban on the use and operation of remotely piloted aircraft (RPAS or drones) on 16 February (municipal election day) and 17 May 2020 (congressional and presidential election day) nationwide from 6am to 6pm. Alejandro Herrera, general director of IDAC, signed aresolution to that effect.
The resolution is in response to a request made by the Central Electoral Board regarding overflights of drones around polling places. Exempt from the ban are drones or remotely piloted aircraft systems operated by the Armed Forces for security matters.
“Violation or non-observance of this prohibition will result in the application of the corresponding sanctions and penalties provided for in the civil aviation legislation, the Civil Code, the Criminal Code and other applicable special laws of the Dominican Republic,” as stated in a notice published in the print media.
