Community and labor union associations in Boca Chica held a rally on Monday, 2 March 2020, outside the Navy base to protest the Public Health Ministry’s decision to install a medical unit on the base for isolating people suspected of being infected with the coronavirus. At present, the nation’s main isolation unit is at the Ramón de Lara Hospital at the San Isidro Air Base in eastern Santo Domingo.
Jose Luis Arias, president of the Truckers Union and spokesman for the protestors, called on all the residents of Boca Chica to demonstrate against the decision.
The protesters blocked the entrance to the naval base with trucks and vehicles, carrying signs and banners demanding rejection of Ministry plans to set up the aforementioned center.
The Ministry of Defense would announce the center would thus not be built in Boca Chica, the Listin Diario reports in its 4 March issue.
