
Central Electoral Board (JCE) judge Roberto Saladín says he will be wearing a black tie until the Organization of American States (OAS) issues its report to explain to the nation what caused the e-voting machines to fail on Sunday, 16 February. The glitch resulted in the aborting of the election.
Saladín accused sectors of the population, “financed by international bodies”, of “maintaining a campaign of discredit against that body.”
At 11:11 am on 16 February 2020, the JCE canceled the municipal elections. Voters in many polling places had been impeded to vote when the electronic voting system did not load the full ballot of competing politicians. For that 16 February municipal election, 60% of the vote was automated, and 40% was by paper ballots. The paper ballots were also annulled and an extraordinary election scheduled for 15 March 2020.
