DR team almost makes it to the U-20 world championship in soccer

The Dominican under-20 women’s soccer team surprised everyone when last week it defeated Jamaica 2-1 in the quarterfinals to make the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) Women’s U-20 Championship final tour and earn the right to play Team USA in the semifinal in front of home fans. This was the highest-ever finish for a Dominican team in a Concacaf tournament. The win against Jamaica meant the Dominicans would play a rematch against the USA.

But on Saturday, 7 March 2020, the Dominican team lost to Team USA, missing out on the opportunity to play in the 2020FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica and Panama, as well as a spot in the tournament final. The DR had defeated the USA in a first match.

Team USA didn’t give an inch. It defeated the upstart Dominican team 6-0 in the semifinal that was played at the soccer field at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium at the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center in Santo Domingo.

Team USA next faced Mexico on Sunday, 8 March for the finals, to win the championship against Mexico, 4-1.
