
The Central Electoral Board (JCE) ruled on Monday, 9 March that it will not extend the deadline for party candidate registrations for President, Vice President and congressional candidates. The deadline had already been extended from 3 March to 10 March after the rescheduling of the municipal election from 16 February to 15 March 2020. The deadline is Tuesday, 10 March at midnight.
So far, of the majority parties, only the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) has announced its vice presidential candidate. Vice President Margarita Cedeño will be the running mate for Gonzalo Castillo. This was announced on 24 February. Cedeño has been the countr’s Vice President since 2012. Cedeño is married to former President Leonel Fernández. She served as First Lady from 2004-2008 and 2008-2012.
Luis Abinader is the presidential candidate for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). He ran for President on the party ticket in 2016, losing to President Danilo Medina. At the time his running mate was Carolina Mejía, daughter of former President Hipólito Mejía. Carolina Mejía is now running for mayor for the National District.
Former President Leonel Fernández is also running for President, this time for the People’s Force (Fuerza del Pueblo), the new political party that he founded when splitting from the PLD after complaining he had been the victim of fraud in the 6 October primary. During Fernández’s first term (1996-2000), the Vice President was psychiatrist Jaime David Fernández Mirabal. Lawyer Rafael Alburquerque served as Vice President during the 2004-2008 and 2008-2012 Fernández governments.
