Rum producers in the Dominican Republic have ten days to issue their observations on the draft of the technical ruling for the production of rum. Deputy Minister for Industrial Development Juan Tomás Monegro has coordinated the government effort to summarize best practices for the rum industry.
Monegro highlighted the efforts that the government is carrying out to ensure Dominican rum keeps its market share abroad and serve as a distinctive element for tourism in the Dominican Republic.
The regulations include conformity assessment, labeling and packaging. The ruling also incorporates measures for the inspection and supervision of the market and the penalties for noncompliance with the regulations.
Monegro said that after the industries send in their recommendations in the 10-day window, the agreed-upon draft will be submitted to public hearings within 60 days. Thereafter, through the Dominican Institute for Quality (INDOCAL) and the Ministry of Foreign Relations (MIREX), the draft will be submitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) for its opinion, to prevent conflicts at the international level.
For the private sector, also backing the initiative is the Dominican Association of Rum Producers (ADOPRON); the Association of Dominican Rum Producers (ARN); the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD); the Association of Industrial Companies of Herrera (AEIH) and the Association of Distilling Companies of the Dominican Republic.
