Huge fireworks display on the Avenida del Puerto

E. Leon Jimenes (manufacturer of Marlboro Cigarettes and Presidente Beer) sponsored a big fireworks display off the Avenida del Puerto, which was seen from all over Santo Domingo at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. The company which manufactures Marlboro cigarettes and Presidente beer contracted the Gucci family from the United States for the display. This company has organized firework displays at world fairs in Knoxville, Tennessee and New Orleans, for the Special Olympics held in New York and Los Angeles, as well as for the 100th anniversary of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty and the 200th anniversary of the constitution of the United States. The Gucci family was also responsible for the firework displays held at the swearings in of presidents Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Bill Clinton, among other events. Also on the New Year’s Eve program are performances by the groups Las Chicas del Can, Yarumba, Kinito Mendez, Fernando Villalona and Los Hermanos Rosario.
