The president of the Ayuntamiento del Distrito Nacional and other key figures in the municipality of Santo Domingo are proposing that the city’s council, health authorities and the National Police create a “red light” zone, i.e. an area where prostitution is tolerated. Dr. Andrés Henríquez, president of the Ayuntamiento and engineer Miguel Sanz Jiminián and Lic. Andrés Ayala Portoreal, aldermen for the PRSC and PRD, support the proposal. They say that all modern cities have such zones. Messrs Henríquez, Sanz Jiminián and Ayala said that hotel and tour operators have repeatedly complained about the problems created for their customers when prostitutes openly offer their services “on any corner.” They feel the municipality should designate special areas for such activities as is done in other parts of the world.
