Controlling prostitution in Santo Domingo

The president of the Municipality of Santo Domingo, Dr. Andrés Henríquez, continued to press for the regulation of prostitution in Dominican cities, especially Santo Domingo. He said that there are several brothels very near city schools. He mentioned one in front of a school on Calle Isabel Aguiar in Herrera and another close to the Escuela República de Chile in Villa Francisca. He said there are numerous discotheques that are open the full 24 hours in La Feria. He criticized the fact that the Centro de los Héroes that during the day is the site of several important government ministries and offices, including the National Congress, becomes a nest of prostitution after work. He said that the city will be presenting a bill so that it may, together with the National Police and the Ministry of Health, better regulate prostitution.

Depending on what happens in Santo Domingo, other cities and towns in the tourist zones may follow suit, creating “red light” districts to contain prostitution.
