The ecology and marine life of the Caribbean will be highlighted in a tour of the region this autumn. Eco Passages of Topsfield, Mass., will have eight-night visits to the Samana Peninsula and the northern coast of the Dominican Republic departing 21 September and 19 October.
The Eco Passages excursions will be led by Dr. Arthur Gaines, a researcher at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts. Participants will hear lectures and take part in discussions and visits to an offshore reef and Los Haitises National Park, which includes a network of steep-walled islands with dense nesting areas for birds. Underwater cameras and snorkeling equipment will be provided. The price is US$2,440 per person in double occupancy at a sea front hotel at Playa Galeras on the Samana Peninsula. (The first night will be spent in Santo Domingo.) Air fare from the United States, approximately US$350 from New York, is extra. Reservations: (800)773-6491.
