The presidential candidate for the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), Leonel Fernández, expressed his concern about the increase of the coronavirus pandemic worldwide, and suggested to address the issue of economic impact the convening of virtual sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, of the Group of 77 (G-77) plus China, representing 135 developing countries; and of the Group of 20 (G-20), which incorporates the twenty most developed economies in the world.
At the regional level of Latin America and the Caribbean, he said that it is time for Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) to gather its 34 Member States and chart the course for its future.
He noted that in the United States, President Donald Trump announced that social isolation measures will be extended until 30 April, modifying an earlier forecast that established it until only 3 April.
“But in addition to those infected, Covid-19 has become a lethal weapon for the world’s economies. The projections are that a recession is on the horizon,” he warned in a video posted on his various social networks.
In a statement sent by the party’s communications department, Fernandez focused his concern on the contraction of economic growth, company closures, massive worker layoffs, the collapse of financial markets, the decline in international trade, the fall in raw material prices and much uncertainty and volatility.
“As the Dominican Republic is integrated into the global economy, we will not be able to escape this storm. Given this reality, it is imperative, as happened with the global financial crisis of 2008, that the international community, through its main institutions, draw up guidelines to avoid the shipwreck and, on the contrary, achieve a rapid recovery of what feeds the life of the people: their economies,” said Fernandez.
“A global health and economic pandemic demands a unified response from all the peoples of the world”, warned the president of FP.
