As of Bulletin #25, and 45 days after the first person tested positive for Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic, Elías Piña is the only province remaining without officially confirmed cases. The province is located in the center of the provinces that are on the border with Haiti.
As reported in El Dia, Elías Piña provincial governor Juan Alberto Aquino says that residents have adhered to preventive recommendations against congregating. They have also stayed away from the many mountain and river recreational areas that are closed. He said that the province and city governments of the six municipalities are fumigating and keeping track of any person who may be sick.
“We congratulate our people for their civism and collaboration in adhering to the measures ordered by the Ministry of Public Health to battle the Covid-19 epidemic,” he said.
He also spoke of the use of roadblocks in specific areas, such as Los Molinos in El Llano.
He said the municipal and provincial authorities have kept in constant communication to avoid any conglomerations of people. He said these have motivated people to stay at home so that the virus does not enter the province, regarded as one of the poorest in the country.
The Elías Piña municipalities are Hondo Valle, Bánica, Comendador, Juan Santiago, El Llano and Pedro Santana.
