Carolina Mejía says traffic, environment and garbage are her priorities

Upon taking office in a momentous event in times of the coronavirus at the city hall, the capital city’s new mayor Carolina Mejía stressed the city government will make great strides to continue to take measures to stop the advance of Covid-19 in the country. She acknowledged the limitations the virus imposes on city government plans.

She said high on her agenda is working to improve traffic congestion in the city, environmental issues and improvements in garbage collection and handling.

She spoke of her commitment to the Urban Planning and Development Plan 2030, enacted by her predecessor, David Collado, with the backing of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Her first measure in office was to name Hugo Beras the secretary-general of the city government.

Mejia, who is secretary general of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), won the city government in the 15 March 2020 election with 57.46% of the vote to 32.27% of the vote. She announced her candidacy just two months before the election when former city Mayor David Collado announced he would not seek reelection on 5 December 2019. The election had been scheduled for 16 February and was rescheduled for 15 March due to an e-voting glitch.
