
President Danilo Medina on the occasion of International Labor Day on 1 May 2020 called for unity of all to restore the economic and social development in the country, affected the coronavirus pandemic.
The holiday is scheduled to be celebrated in the Dominican Republic on Monday, 4 May 2020.
The President sent a fraternal embrace of hope to the men, women and working families “who are building the prosperous country and the welfare state in the Dominican Republic every day.”
The presidential candidates for leading opposition parties, Luis Abinader of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and Leonel Fernández of the People’s Force (FP) have requested participation in national decisions to combat the coronavirus and restore the new normalcy. The political opposition has not yet been integrated into government efforts to combat the virus and restore the economy.
The celebration of Labor Day coincides with the suspension without pay of over 800,000 employees in the Dominican Republic. This year it is happening at a time when a majority of Dominican employees are staying at home as part of a national partial lockdown.
