Long weekend brought traffic jams as people flee city

The long Labor Day weekend, despite the “shelter-in-place” orders from the government authorities, did not stop thousands of Dominicans from deciding to leave Greater Santo Domingo for the Labor Day long weekend. Photographs in the Listin Diario showed kilometers of traffic tie-ups, as people tried to exit the city.

The authorities had reinforced the police and military personnel at the toll station in Pedro Brand, and all Friday afternoon and evening, there were long traffic jams. Folks trying to use the Duarte or 6 November highways generally had to take detours to get anywhere. The government at no time had announced restrictions to transit in off-curfew hours. Only announced are the limitations on entering the cities of Puerto Plata and San Francisco de Macoris.

There were no inconveniences for those driving East from the capital city.

Thousands left the city, fleeing the morning smoke covering due to the fire at the Duquesa garbage dump.

International Labor Day falls on 1 May, but in the Dominican Republic, it was set for celebration on Monday, 4 May 2020.
