Special Covid-19 intervention planned for Greater Santo Domingo starting Thursday

Public Health Minister Rafael Sanchez Cárdenas announced the government has scheduled a Thursday, Friday and Saturday (14-16 May 2020) coronavirus operation in Santo Domingo to zero in on areas where there are outbreaks.

Greater Santo Domingo has the highest number of cases in the Dominican Republic, with around 45% of all confirmed cases. The Minister did not give details.

As reported, the operation had been scheduled for two weeks ago, but was postponed due to the smog caused by the Duquesa garbage dump blaze as of 28 April 2020. On Tuesday, 12 May there was no smog covering the city, as had been occurring over the two weeks. The Ministry of Public Works on Monday had said that 95% of the fire at the dump was under control.

Over the weekend, there were reports of dozens of families and friends gathering at the Malecon of Santo Domingo on Sunday to enjoy the Caribbean breezes.
