
The presidential candidate for the leading opposition party, the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) presented his proposed government program to the Central Electoral Board (JCE) on 12 May 2020. The presidential election is scheduled for 5 July 2020, after it was postponed from 17 May due to the coronavirus epidemic.
Luis Abinader became the first candidate to comply with the Political Parties Law requirement. The program was submitted to the JCE by Orlando Jorge Mera, political delegate of the party to the JCE, as well as Julio Peña, acting political delegate to the JCE, Miguel Ceara Hatton, technical and public policy secretary, and PRM members leaders Joel Santos, Andrés Astacio, Efrén Cuello and Ranulfo Rodríguez.
Presidential candidates have up to 21 May 2020 to present their governmental programs.
Luis Abinader’s government program is titled, “El Cambio que Viene, un País para su Gente” (The Coming Change, a Country for its People) covering economic and social development framework for improving quality of life of the population in the Dominican Republic. As described by the political party, the program proposes the building of a society based on citizen power and sustained within a framework of rights; a supportive, democratic and participatory country that transforms the productive model and promotes technological and organizational innovation.
The program states: “The new approach to development that we defend aims to make the process of growth an inclusive social, economic and institutional reality, which promotes equal opportunities for citizens and which has a modern, efficient and effective state, capable of responding to the challenges of citizen security and deficits in public services, to the modernization and sanitation of the electricity sector, complying with the new demands imposed by a sovereign foreign policy in a globalized world”.
