The ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) Senate approved the request received from President Danilo Medina to extend the National State of Emergency for another 25 days. The resolution now passes to the Chamber of Deputies where it will be heard on Thursday, 14 May 2020. The bill calls for extending the state of emergency from 18 May through 11 June 2020. The provision enables the government to fast track procurement and limit citizen rights.
Altagracia Salazar in her Sin Maquillaje morning radio talk program asks what the State of Emergency has served for when there are not inputs for PCR tests and the government continues to react to spikes with containment operations. She said the special privileges to government has produced four procurement contracts that have had to be annulled for major irregularities after they were denounced by investigative journalists.
