National State of Emergency to be extended to 1 June 2020

The Chamber of Deputies has given the Medina administration an extension of 15 days on the National State of Emergency. The government had requested an extension from 18 May to 11 June. The extension will now be from 18 May to 1 June 2020 once approved in the Senate and signed by the President.

The resolution returns to the Senate for passing. The Senate had previously approved the bill for the 18 May to 11 June period requested by President Danilo Medina.

The National State of Emergency enables the government to carry out fast-tracked financial and procurement operations. Muckracking journalists and political opposition have produced substantial evidence of major irregularities in government procurement for the health crisis. The independent investigations have resulted in the cancelation of 4 major contracts.
