According to Coronavirus Bulletin #61 of the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Epidemiology, the Dominican Republic has 13,223 confirmed cases, 498 new confirmed cases and 441 deaths, including 7 new deaths. There are 2,035 patients are hospitalized, including 136 patients in intensive care units. The results are from 58,357 PCR diagnostic tests.

The Pan American Health Organization says that the country needs to be able to show consistency in testing before easing activity restrictions.
The statistical reports do not include results from rapid response blood antibody tests or patients diagnosed with tomography or other means. The Dominican Republic has a population of more than 10 million people.
As of Monday, 18 May 2020 at 6pm, the most confirmed cases continue to be reported in the National District and Santo Domingo Province, Santiago, La Vega, Duarte, San Cristobal, Espaillat, Puerto Plata, La Romana, Hermanas Mirabal, and Sánchez Ramírez. All other provinces report 200 or less cases.
The largest increases in confirmed cases were reported for Santo Domingo Province (148), San Cristóbal (105), the National District (105), La Romana (70), San Cristóbal (53), Santiago (40), La Altagracia (15), La Vega (13), Puerto Plata (12), Monseñor Nouel / Bonao (11), Peravia (5), Azua (4), San Pedro de Macorís (4), Duarte (3), Espaillat / Moca (3), María Trinidad Sánchez / Nagua (3), San Juan de la Maguana (3), Barahona (2), Bahoruco (2), Sánchez Ramírez (2) and Valverde (2). The Ministry of Public Health reports 1 or less confirmed cases in 14 other provinces.

The explanation for the spike in La Romana is an outbreak in the public jail. 76 La Romana jail inmates were relocated to the isolation center in Batey Bienvenido in Santo Domingo province. Sanitation efforts were carried out to disinfect the jail. In Greater Santo Domingo (National District and Santo Domingo province), the increase in numbers comes after the government authorities visited barrios to reach out to persons known to be sick to bring testing and guidance.
Haiti reports 533 confirmed cases and 21 deaths as of 17 May 2020.
In the Americas, the Dominican Republic is ranked 9th in confirmed cases after the United States, Brazil, Canada, Peru, Ecuador, Mexico, Chile and Colombia. In the Caribbean and Central America, the Dominican Republic has the most confirmed cases.
