JCE moves to organize the absentee vote

The plenary of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) held a virtual meeting on Wednesday, 27 May 2020 with the secretaries of the Coordination Offices of Electoral Logistics Abroad (OCLEE) and the representatives of political parties in each of the host governments, to review the current situation for the preparation of the 5 July elections. The JCE on 26 May 2020 finally issued the resolution that calls for the organization of the presidential and congressional elections abroad on the same day as in the Dominican Republic.

The JCE says that the director of the Dominican vote abroad, Gilberto Cruz Herasme, explained there is a tendency to look for large locations. The schools are now closed and larger places will better accommodate the rules of keeping distance between voters. He also said new members of each community are being sought to work in the voting places, as many poll workers are of the vulnerable 60+ age. The next meeting is scheduled for 30 May.

Among those participating in the meeting were Rafael Gonzalez, New York; Yohanna Tineo, New Jersey; Arturo Reyes, Boston; Gisela Almonte, Philadelphia; Sonia Lavandier, Reading, Philadelphia; Sublime Larancuent, Washington; Jose Reyes, Orlando; Nircy Vasquez, Miami; Wendilissa Perez, Puerto Rico; William Metivier, Panama; Marilyn Rosario, San Martin; Angel Mercalina, Curaçao Luciana Díaz, Madrid; Carlos Salazar, Barcelona; Vanessa Mercedes, Milan; Unael Ramírez, Zurich; and Ramón Ortiz, Holland.

A total 595,879 Dominicans have registered to vote abroad. They are authorized to vote both for the President and Vice President of the Republic, as well as for seven overseas deputies that will represent the voting communities in the National Congress.

The vote abroad is divided into three districts:
District #1: Canada (Montreal, Toronto), the United States (New York, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C, Connecticut). Three deputies to elect.
District #2: Curacao; United States (Miami); Panama; Puerto Rico (San Juan); St. Martin (Sint Marteen), Venezuela (Caracas). Two deputies to elect.
District #3: Spain (Madrid, Barcelona); Holland (Amsterdam); Italy (Milan); Switzerland (Zurich). One deputy to elect.
