Margarita will take a break from government relief program to focus on her campaign

Vice President of the Republic Margarita Cedeño announced on Monday, 8 June 2020 that she will take a leave of absence from her responsibilities as coordinator of the Government’s Social Cabinet to devote herself entirely to the campaign. Opposition parties had criticized the Vice President, who is the running mate on the ruling Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) ticket, had been taking advantage of her being in charge of the country’s largest Covid-19 relief programs.

“The streets are calling for my presence. Therefore, from today I will be temporarily absent from my functions as coordinator of the @gabsocialRD, to carry out activities proper to my condition as a candidate during working hours, in compliance with the Law of Public Function,” she announced through Twitter.

The Vice President said she is leaving the position “after fulfilling her responsibility as a public official to address the Covid-19 pandemic and the humanitarian crisis we are successfully facing.”

Cedeño’s temporary resignation comes days after the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) filed a complaint with the Specialized Prosecutor for Electoral Crimes against 97 public officials, including the Vice President. The public officials are running for elected office in the July 5 elections.
