
The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the seizing of 492 pounds (223 kilos) of cocaine inside a container on board the Santo Domingo-San Juan, Puerto Rico ferry. The ship had arrived on 10 June to Puerto Rico. The CBP Contraband Enforcement Team inspected various containers arriving on the M/V Kydon and found eight duffle bags containing 20 bricks in each. A CBP K9 (canine unit) alerted positive to the duffle bags, and a sample tested positive for cocaine. The cocaine cargo is estimated to be worth US$6 million.
“Smugglers use very creative means to conceal their illicit drug loads into the international supply chain,” stated Roberto Vaquero, Acting Director of Field Operations in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. “Our officers’ expertise, along with the utilization of all available tools, resulted in the detection of these narcotics.
