The Medina administration has only included RD$5 billion for the health sector in the RD$150 billion complementary budget that passed in the Senate last week. Dr. Plutarco Arias, who is the director of the health cabinet for the opposition Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), says this supplementary budget for public health is “insignificant.” He said that the health sector needs greater financial support to combat the spread of the disease.
Arias questioned that while the authorities are reporting an increase in the number of deaths and infections from the pandemic, they do not value the importance of investing in the health of the population.
“The signal they are sending us from the Presidential Palace is that they want a worsening of the health problems in the whole country,” said the doctor and opposition political leader.
He understood that the supplementary budget had been drawn up in response to the political interests of the time, without considering the importance of improving hospitals and health in general.
