Deligne Ascención to be Public Works Minister

President-elect Luis Abinader announced by tweet that engineer Deligne Ascención will be his minister of Public Works. Civil engineer Deligne Ascención played a key role in the Abinader political campaign.

Ascencion served as the electoral affairs officer of the Modern Revolutionary Party during the Abinader campaign. He had served as Deputy Minister for School Infrastructure at the Ministry of Education (2000-2004), former director of Urban Traffic at the National District Municipality and director of the Project Execution Unit of the Development Bank of the Federal Republic of Germany, KFW.

The announcement comes at the same time that Abinader announced the shutdown of the Office of Supervisory Engineering Works of the Presidency (OISOE) as part of efforts to make government more efficient.

OISOE was created in 1987 to supervise infrastructure projects. Nevertheless, over the years, the department evolved to become a parallel Ministry of Public Works. Several major corruption scandals have surrounded the OISOE under the different governments.

Abinader said the Ministry of Public Works would consolidate all government engineering projects.
