Dominican construction sector proves its resilience

The Dominican Association of Portland Cement Producers (Adocem) says that domestic cement consumption decreased 20.3% in the first half of the year, compared to the same period in 2019. Despite the collapse of activities due to Covid-19, the construction sector promptly resumed activities. The new Abinader administration has promised to kickstart the Dominican economy carrying out several works all around the country.

In its bulletin, Cementando, Adocem reports that cement production during the January-June period this year was 2,150,200 metric tons, for a 23.5% decline compared to 2019.

“Despite the adverse effects on the local market caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, these results are evidence of the gradual recovery that is taking place in the construction sector after it was paralyzed in the first months of the health emergency due to the pandemic,” states the entity in the publication.

Cement consumption is one of the most representative indicators of the development of the construction industry. Adocem says that while the construction industry in the Dominican Republic still has a long way to go to return to the levels of previous years, it is betting on recovery and strengthening its stable position in the market.
