The Dominican government pays the Red Cross Dominicana US$8,500 per ambulance every month. Dr. Ligia Leroux de Ramírez, president of the Dominican Red Cross, confirmed on Wednesday that a large number of ambulances used by the National System of Emergency Attention and Security 911 are rented to the Red Cross.
She said when the 911 system was set up in 2014, the first agreements were signed with the Ministry of Public Health to rent the ambulances for US$8,000 per month. She said six years later the rent is US$8,500.
The lease cost covers equipment, wages, medicines, oxygen, expendable material, vehicle maintenance, tires, uniforms, protective material, insurance and payment of the unit to the Red Cross Federation Leasing system.
The plan covers 123 ambulances in service, which make approximately 540 emergencies per day.
The Red Cross has an international system called the International Fleet System for Country Needs, which is based in Dubai for storage and control.
