School does NOT officially start today

The 2020-2021 school year will not officially start today, 24 August 2020, the date the former Ministry of Education had set for the start. Instead, the new education authorities will be presenting their plan for the next school year on Monday, 24 August. The event will be streamed live from the Presidential Palace at 4pm. The spread of Covid-19 virus conditions the start of school. Confirmed cases are now streaking past 90,000.

Nevertheless, several middle class and upscale schools announced they would go ahead with the start of classes on 24 August, as the former Ministry of Education authorities had authorized. These schools say they have prepared to offer online classes until the conditions for in-person classes are adequate.

Education Minister Roberto Furcal has said that several issues are pending and new solutions will be presented on Monday, 24 August. The lack of sufficient hardware at the elementary and middle levels (K-12) and the availability of efficient internet access (WiFi) among large segments of the population are just the tips of the iceberg. Of course, parents who have jobs and economic obligations are anxious for the student to get back to school.
