The Senate voted on Wednesday, 26 August 2020 to extend the present National State of Emergency. The extension requested by President Luis Abinader will run for another 45 days. It would have expired on 3 September. This will bring the curfew and other emergency measures through 18 October 2020. The Abinader administration is expected to announce new measures as the new health authorities seek to reduce the high 30% positivity rate of Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic.
The bill now moves to the Chamber of Deputies that is convened for Friday, 28 August.
The ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) is majority in both houses in Congress, so the extension is expected to pass.
