IFC, a division of the World Bank, is pleased with its recent funding US$34 million for the Tropicalia sustainable tourism development in Miches, north of Punta Cana. The IFC director Judith Green told Listin Diario they are ready to fund efforts under the new Public-Private Partnersips (APP) law. President Luis Abinader has advanced the law would be used to grow tourism projects in beach areas of southwestern Pedernales.
IFC director sees the importance of tourism in the Caribbean region and as a significant pillar of the Dominican economy. She said the IFC is very focused on supporting economically and environmentally sustainable tourism.
“We are particularly interested in supporting the development of new tourism destinations in rural areas, which contribute to development in the poorer areas of the country. This includes projects that promote greater links with the local community, that consume local products whenever possible, that incorporate women, and that promote the development of SMEs. This would also include infrastructure projects related to the tourism sector, such as airports, water and waste management systems, built under high environmental standards,” she explained in the interview with Listin Diario.
