Dominican Academy of Sciences backs Pedernales tourism development

The Dominican Academy of Sciences announced its support to the Abinader government’s proposal to develop the beach strip and city of Pedernales as part of the Pedernales Development Plan. The Abinader administration says it will be adapting the Lemay Master Plan presented during the past administration. Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera has said there are 26 km of beach outside Bahia de las Aguilas and other national park protected areas, in the province. This is the area that will be developed.

The Abinader administration has announced it would build a sea-fronting boardwalk and a small dock-marina in the city of Pedernales. The plan is to integrate the town people to the development. President Luis Abinader visited Pedernales last weekend.

Luis Scheker Ortiz, president of the Dominican Academy of Sciences, told Diario Libre that he is pleased with the focus of the new government regarding Pedernales’ tourism development. He said the Academy is in the best disposition to support this government in rescuing one of the most abandoned provinces and one that has an extraordinary tourist potential.

The Abinader administration envisions the potential for building 3,000 hotel rooms and an airport in Pedernales.
