UK has a new ambassador

New United Kingdom Ambassador Mockbul Ali Obe presented his credentials to Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez at the Ministry of Foreign Relations on 1 October 2020. Before his appointment to the Dominican Republic, he was deputy head of mission at the Bahrain Embassy. He has also served in the missions in Libya and Egypt. The Santo Domingo post is his first ambassador position.

Of Bengali South Asian heritage, the ambassador was born in the UK. He is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London with postgraduate studies in the Royal College of Defense Studies.

Wikipedia explains that he has served as policy advisor on the wider Muslim world to three former UK foreign secretaries. He has also played a vital role in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s outreach to Muslims worldwide. He was a member of the UK Foreign Office’s Engaging with the Islamic World Group (EIWG) and served as the head of Prevent, Counter Ideology at the FCO.

In 2014, Ali received the Royal College of Defense Studies Award for Strategic Leadership.

He will represent both the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Haiti has a growing Muslim-following population. Ali is married to Sajeda Qureshi.
