Attorney General calls for more budget

Attorney General Miriam German held a press conference to answer questions of journalists. She explained the department needs time to prepare the cases.

Nevertheless, she used the conference to make the general public aware that her department needs more funds to prosecute crime, corruption and impunity. She says the RD$7 billion allotted to the department in the 2021 National Budget are “not enough.

There are high expectations that the prosecution will tackle thousands of corruption cases in government. But the prosecutor says that those employed in the department are poorly paid in comparison to those employed in the Judicial Branch.

She said mentioned that those employed in the Judicial Branch get a 14th wage, vacation bonus and a school bonus for their children. But the prosecutors that put at risk their lives and their safety are poorly paid. She said that worse still, many have not retired because their retirement plans do not guarantee they may maintain their living standards. German spoke from her personal experience. She is a former Supreme Court of Justice judge.

The Executive Branch submitted the National Budget to the Congress last week. President Luis Abinader will be speaking on 8 October 2020 on the budget.
