Did a Russian design inspire the DR country brand? The actual designer says he created it from scratch

The country brand of the Dominican Republic is getting media coverage but not because of its creativity. A Russian graphic artist Ivan Bobrov is claiming that his graphic created for a small company in 2014 was copied.

He says he is from a small town in Russia and his life is very complicated with Covid-19, so he doesn’t know if he should take action to claim the copyright for the logo. He said he never placed his logo in any platform for sale. The logo was online and the artist was looking to be hired.

Actually, the Dominican country brand logo’s RD graphics are quite different from the K logo. The country brand was contracted to a consortium made up by Kraneo, a local advertising agency, managed by Miguel Alfonseca. Others participating in the contract were the Mexican firms Beker and Integra. The contract was for over RD$32 million.

The contractor, Jose Diego Beker Migdial, of Beker, the Mexican creative agency, responsible for developing the logo, claims it is an original, the result of his creativity. He says that many times people just coincide on typographical elements. He said the trademark has been registered and the Dominican government has all the rights to its use and exploitation. “Mike Alfonseca and his agency Kraneo had no intervention in this specific graphic proposal,” he said in a press release, as reported in N Digital.

While the typography is mirrored, the effects are not the same. The RD lettering comes alive, and seemingly appears to dance. The lettering looks like legs dancing merengue, the national dance.

Bobruv wrote on his Instagram account: “Hello 🙂 I wish I speak Spanish today. Wow. I’m the author of this K logo from 2014 and a simple person originally from a small city in Russia. I have dozens of DMs right now by good people from Dominican Republic and the same amounts of emails. First of all, thanks a lot to all people who sent me the information and supported me in this case, that means a lot ❤️ second, I’ve never participated in that country branding creating process and the logo was never on sold in any stock galleries (never did that for any of the logos I’ve ever done). I’m not sure yet how to react in this situation, my life is quite complex already in this crazy times of the pandemic. But when I’ll get more information I’ll immediately bring up an update here. Thanks again and stay safe.”
