Cooperation deal with China postponed twice

The Abinader administration has postponed on two recent occasions the signing of an economic and technical cooperation agreement with the People’s Republic of China. The Dominican government and the Embassy of China had scheduled the signing of the agreement on 27 October, and then on 10 November 2020

As reported in Listin Diario, neither the Ministry of Foreign Relations nor the Embassy of China has explained the postponements’ reasons.

The Dominican Republic signed for full diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China on 1 May 2018. Several memorandums of understanding have been signed for multiple projects. Nevertheless, lending nor mega projects with the Chinese government have happened.

Recently, President Abinader announced that investing in sea and air port infrastructure and telecommunications are off-limits for Chinese investment.

A recent report by Bernardo Vega in Acento looks into Chinese investment in Bahamas, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica.
