The Presidente beer brewery, Cervecería Nacional Dominicana has committed to purchase 70% of the production of the Caribbean Glass Industry. Caribbean Glass Industry is a new venture that will manufacture glass bottles primarily for the Dominican market. Grupo Rizek of the Dominican Republic and Grupo Borja are the investors.
The company is located in the export free zone of Pedro Brand in northern Santo Domingo province. It will have capacity to produce 500 million bottles a year. It will use locally collected glass for production.
President Luis Abinader was present for the announcement of construction works at the industrial plant. The plant is scheduled to be in operation by February 2021. It will employ around 300 workers.
Speaking at the event, Hector Jose Rizek of Rizek Group announced the plant would supply the national demand and will also turn the country into a glass bottle exporter. Rizek said the reactivation of the industry is needed to promote the circular economy model and support recycling.
The Presidente beer brewery will stop importing around 229 million glass bottles that are acquired annually. This is around US$240 million over a six year period. Luciano Castillo, CEO of AB InBev, the parent company of the Presidente beer brewery, said that they have put their trust in the local investors who share vision and purpose.
