Guillermo Moreno wants independent justice to look into 2004-2012 government term

Alianza Pais president Guillermo Moreno understands the government needs to investigate all the former Dominican Liberation Party administrations. He says the Justice Department needs to investigate government officials during the administrations of former President Leonel Fernández (2004-2012). The first arrests carried out by the new Justice Department cover accusations of corruption during the Danilo Medina administration (2012-2020). Moreno says the PLD is being asked to pay up for corruption over its many years in government.

Moreno says the Justice Department should investigate many more names as of 2004. Moreno said the recent actions reflect Dominicans’ generalized wish for an end to impunity and due process in justice.

“That is why we fully back the actions undertaken by the Justice Department to investigate corruption,” said the former National District prosecutor and former presidential candidate for Alianza Pais.

He said there is sufficient evidence in the Anti-Pulpo Operation file to link the accused to serious crimes that will lead them to prison. He recommended preventive custody for the accused, saying there is a risk these may try to flee the country.

The danger of escape is another risk that would favor the judge to keep the accused in prison, according to the president of Alianza País.

He said the Dominican people want the stolen assets to be restored.

He spoke with the press during the wake for former Diario Libre executive editor Adriano Miguel Tejada.

Diario Libre also editorialized that if only eight years are prosecutors, they, too could be held in contempt. “Due process will become a vendetta. The house may be divided today, but there was a time when the occupants did not distance themselves and enjoyed the same party,” writes the editorialist referring to when Leonel Fernandez and Danilo Medina were of the same political party. “One cannot insist on the pirate justice that wears a patch and no blindfold, and only sees with one eye, and one part, when it is a whole,” says the Diario Libre editorial.
