
Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz Lopez met with the top executives of the major supermarket chains in the Dominican Republic — Jumbo, Nacional, Sirena and Bravo. The nation’s largest food retailers commit to reduce prices on very basic food items, such as rice, beans, vegetables, onions and garlic, as well as poultry, and sugar. Lower prices on the shelves mean more purchasing power for local consumers.
The food security agreement seeks to buy time as harvests of local farm production become available. Speaking for the supermarket chains, Mario Lama Jr. said that many prices, such as for onions, both red and white, are already going down. The group told the minister that he “can count on us.”
