Tragedy at sea, seven lucky survivors

The Dominican Navy was able to rescue seven persons, and five lifeless bodies were recovered at sea of around 30 who were said to have attempted the unlawful crossing from the eastern coast of the DR to Puerto Rico.

The incident occurred off the shores of Lavacama, La Altagracia province, after setting sail from near the Laguna Nisibon in the dawn hours on Friday, 4 December 2020. An aircraft, four naval units, patrol boats and speed boats combed the coastal waters in the search of survivors.

Dominican naval authorities have reported that since 16 August 2020 they have intercepted 195 boats and some 900 persons who were arrested and processed. In addition, there are 22 boat “captains,” the trip organizers, collaborators, and contraband operators now serving time in prison. In years past, there have been even greater tragedies, with the number of victims approaching 70 in one instance.
