
With the absence of the member that represents the PLD, the National Council of the Magistracy met on 7 December to begin the process to choose new members of the higher courts. During the Monday evening session, the members approved the work schedule. Antoliano Peralta, legal advisor to President Luis Abinader and spokesperson for the council, said that on 8 December the CNM will summon the aspirants to be members of the Constitutional Court. The CNM seeks to replace four judges of the court whose terms expire on 27 December 2020.
As of that call, the candidates will have 15 days to deposit their documents, explained Antoliano Peralta. He added that the candidates can apply from 8 December to 23 December. Peralta says the public assessment hearings could begin on 13 January 2021.
Last week, Victor Fadul, delegate for the PLD had announced he was abandoning the sessions until the Superior Administrative Court rules on their protest of the People’s Force being awarded the second majority of the Senate vote. On Monday evening, the Superior Administrative Court (TSA) declared inadmissible the appeal of the PLD. Legal advisor Peralta said the sessions can continue with Fadul or without.
