During the hearings of the Anti-Octopus case, Adjunct Prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso, revealed that attorney Carlos Salcedo, legal representative of the accused Juan Alexis Medina and Francisco Pagán, charged almost six million pesos for his legal counsel.
Reynoso leaked the information when commenting that the payment was brought to her attention during investigations into the finances of Alexis Medina. The payment was put on hold by the prosecution.
After Reynoso disclosed the information, Judge José Alejandro Vargas Vargas remarked that the adjunct prosecutor would no longer bring up the matter of payment of lawyer fees in the courtroom. “She is already saying that she has that money, she recognizes that it is her fee and she is going to have to pay it back,” said the judge during the hearing to establish preventive custody. Salcedo had complained about the situation and asked to stop talking about it.
Salcedo’s clients were not able to avoid preventive custody. Judge Jose Alejandro Vargas sent both state contractor Juan Alexis Medina and Office of Supervisory Engineers of Public Works former director Francisco Pagán to serve three-month detention at the San Cristóbal jail in Najayo.
