The Puerto Plata section of the Dominican Council for Fishing and Aquaculture (Codopesca) seized 600 lbs of parrotfish. The capture, sale and consumption of the species is banned. The fresh fish were donated to the food bank of the government welfare agency, Progresando con Solidaridad (ProSoli). The Navy also participated in the confiscating of the illegally captured fish.
Codopesca spokesperson said that the fish was confiscated from two individuals that were parked in a Nissan Frontier pick up on the Malecón of Puerto Plata near the fire station. The fish were packaged in 27 plastic bags.
Parrotfish are essential in the preservation of marine ecosystems and the maintenance of coral reefs.
